Topic: '65 splitty resto with a twist

I bought my splitty in September 2003.
It's a LHD 11 window combi with factory fit full length Goldie rag top.
It was originally ordered by the Swedish military and spent its life doing military type stuff until 1993 when it was bought and shipped to England. It has only had two previous owners in its whole life!!!!!!!!!!!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/abusbefore.jpg
The bus is a bit weird because its LHD with load doors on the left as well.

It was running a 1600 motor with 12V alternator conversion, and 009 with electronic ignition. Coupled to this was a GT (AT code) IRS gearbox rear set up, dropped 2 splines, and a cut and turned 68 Bay front beam with disks.
Inside was a full devon camping interior with original Dudley cooker and osocool fridge!

So on to the bad bits......................
After just three days I blew the engine sad on the M5 and had to build another 1600 in time for Vanfest.  A week later and with the split packed and ready to go I went to Vanfest and moved to Devon, all in the same weekend!!

The split needed a few bits of welding in the corners of the load floor so I started to sort it out over winter 03/04.
Unfortunatley most of my stuff (including my digital camera) was in storage so I never got any photos of the bus in bits first time round, but you can just imagine working on it on the drive (no garage or workshop this time):?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/StevesBus6.jpg

The above photo was taken after I had sorted the structural welding.
I have big plans for the bus so instead of replacing bits and patching over hole's I replaced entire panels, and once i had started poking about with a screw driver........ roll
The list reads like a Schofield catalogue but I was happier doing it once and doing it right. wink

In the end this is what was replaced:
all outriggers
all Jack-points
both inner sills
outer sill below cargo doors
both outer belly pans
complete load floor
both rear arches
both front doglegs
bottom 6 inches of both A-pillars
front panel from the headlights down (twice, dont ask)

Once this lot was done I started collecting bits for the full on resto! tongue

Re: '65 splitty resto with a twist

So with all this lot done what was I to do, relax and wait for something to happen? NAH tongue

Slough swapmeet '03 not only supplied me with loads on Schofield panels, I also picked up a shed load of Autometer guages and a Hurst line-lock

So whilst the bus was on its side getting new metal stitched in I also played with the brakes and fitted the line-lock.

Over the next few months I wired up the Autometer guages so I ended up with a 5" monster tach with shift light as well as oil temp, fuel and volt meters.  The matching speedo was never fitted and is still in its box today!
Again no photos cause i didn't have my camera, sorry folks sad

The bus was run with no other modifications until April '05 when I took the decision to take it off the road and give it the TLC and respray it deserved wink.

Re: '65 splitty resto with a twist

By now you should be getting a feel for this bus?
I've already blown an engine up (driving it to hard, my own fault) all the rotten panels replaced with new metal to make the chassis stiffer, Autometer guages measuring all the vital signs, line-lock fitted for those essential 'tyre warming' moments......you and I both know where this bus is going.

Yes thats right, a good body shop wink

Luckily I had just the place, round the corner from Wendy's (my long suffering other half) parents house.

They gave me a very good quote to get the bus looking lovely so I took them at thier word and started to strip the bus ready for full on resto time tongue

It took me just over a week to go from this

Re: '65 splitty resto with a twist

I told you I was being serious!

The next day I picked my bus up and it looke like this
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/PICT0006.jpg

The bad bits where the nose section (remember I told you not to ask)
the dash (having been cut)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/PICT0018.jpg

and the rear drivers side (N/S) corner

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/PICT0013.jpg

So back it went to the body shop for them to do the pretty welding, prep and spraying in time for Vanfest 2005 roll (yeah right).

Re: '65 splitty resto with a twist

EBAY, the bringer of empty wallets

I found a load of bits on e(vil)bay and started spending sad

First up was a 901 Prosche 911, 5 speed gearbox.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/Porsche5speed.jpg

And if your gonna go fast your gonna have to stop, so a set of 944 4-pot brembo ally calipers was next

http://muchos.co.uk/members/Cleverchap/944calipers.jpg

Then it was a pair of 944 trailing arms..........

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/wheelaarmrearview.jpg

..............so i can fit the new wheels (A-arms pre powdercoating)
stock 14 inch rim               v                        New rim!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/SmallOldvnewwheels.jpg

Now the A-arms have been shot blasted and powdercoated.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/aarmsmall.jpg
and thats the basic running gear sorted out for the rear of the bus.  The front is way more and i'm not collecting it all until after christmas '05 so your gonna have to wait I'm afraid 8)

Re: '65 splitty resto with a twist

In the mean time I was having fun convincing the local garage they did want to finish what they had started.

The nose was the first bit to be replaced, properly this time, with a slight skim of filler rather than buckets of it.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/AutocraftNose.jpg

The work then started around the windscreens as, with safaris waiting to go, I dont want any manky looking metal showing.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/screenrepair.jpg

The long side then got the full flatting treatment
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/Frontbeingpreped.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/Reardriverscornerout.jpg
In the end I took the decision to remove the rear corner and replace it.  I bought a NOS corner from California.

Re: '65 splitty resto with a twist

Hey Jon not only do I have a bus, I also have nice shiny wheels.

From this
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/prerefurb2.jpg
As you can see the lacquer was cracked and peeling and there was kerb damage all the way round the rim on all the wheels

To this
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/Cleverchap/postrefurb.jpg
I also treated the wheels to a full set of black alloy wheel nuts and full colour crested centres to finish the look.

I'm very happy with how these have turned out and recommend DMD wheel refurb in Bristol.  Dave, the owner of DMD, is having all the wheels back at the end of the month so he can carry out a final polish once the paint has hardened 8)

Re: '65 splitty resto with a twist

Cheers for the comments................but you ain't seen nothin yet wink

Christmas should see the delivery of some very trick brake parts as well as a complete new front suspension set-up, to match the Porsche 944 IRS.  Just hope the loft joists can take the strain as I'm having to hide everything in the loft so Wendy doesn't see how much I'm spending
